greyleaf community for the arts, inc

An emerging artist residency program and contemporary arts center for Buffalo and western New York State.

While many institutions exhibit art and present literature and performances, our society presents few ways to support individual artists in the creation of new work. Artists’ communities fill this critical need and offer an opportunity for others to make a meaningful investment in the artistic process by providing today’s artists with the time, space and support needed to create tomorrow’s masterpieces.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

Greyleaf Community for the Arts, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that envisions a world where the arts are an integral part of the human experience and are utilized as a vehicle for personal and spiritual growth.

Greyleaf transforms this vision into a powerful reality with its twofold mission:

-- to nurture and nourish artists in developing their creative process, and the creation of new work.

-- to invest in the future of the communities we serve by making contemporary art readily available to the general public.

Just what is an artists’ residency?
Artists’ residencies provide time and space for artists and other creative individuals to work. Artists are selected through a competitive process for a "temporary" place in the community – length of residency varies from one week to several years. Artists communities’ can include housing, or be studio-only programs; they can support a single artistic discipline or bring together artists from across disciplines.
The Alliance of Artists Communities (http://www.artistcommunities.org) has developed three criteria essential to an artists’ community:
* A primary purpose of the organization is support for artists and other creative individuals in the creation of work.
* The organization brings artists together into a community, providing time and space to work, in a specific site that is dedicated to that mission.
* The organization selects artists for residencies through a competitive admissions process.
